Haryana emerge champions

Haryana edged out Kerala by one point and took home the overall championship as the Federation Cup Junior (U-20) athletics championship concluded here on Thursday.

Haryana tallied 140 points to finish on top while the defending champions Tamil Nadu ended up a disappointing seventh.

Seventeen boys in eleven events attained the qualification norms for the World Junior championships to be held at Barcelona in July but none of the girls could make the cut.

Bengal’s Priyanka Mondal, who timed 55.81 seconds to claim the gold in the 400M, was adjudged the best athlete among girls while in the boys’ section, the honour went to Maharashtra hurdler Durgesh Kumar Pal.

On the final day Karnataka’s Shraddha Rani S (girls’ 3000M, 10:14.34) pocketed a silver while Prajna S Prakash (girls’ heptathlon, 4084 points) claimed a bronze.
