A gang of four persons, including a 20-year-old woman, has been arrested for robbing a Japanese national at Paharganj in central Delhi, police said on Saturday.

Yuka Umakoshi, 24, a Japanese national from Hiroshima Prefecture, told police on May 6 that a man had run away with his handbag after it fell from a cycle-rickshaw he was traveling on.

“The bag contained his passport, two credit cards, an iPod; Rs 5,000, $100 and 10,000 yen in cash, a camera and a cellphone,” said Devesh Chandra Shrivastva, additional deputy commissioner of police (central).

During initial investigation there was no clue about the suspects, so police deployed their sources and collected intelligence on criminals in the area.

“We found that Satish, 26, Ravi, 28, Arjun, 21, and Sonam, 20, could be involved in the case. They were arrested on a tip-off,” Shrivastva added. They then confessed to the stealing.
They were also involved in two other robbery cases — reported by Uttam Bera on Wednesday and Santosh Kumar Jha on Friday.

Police have recovered Yuka’s passport, Rs 2,930, $43 and 2,000 yen from the gang.
“We have Uttam Bera’s ATM card and PAN card, and Santosh Kumar Jha’s voter ID card. We also recovered a country-made pistol and two cartridges,” Shrivastva said.
