Kavita (+81kg) was the lone Indian woman boxer to clinch a medal at the World Championships after she settled for a bronze in the semifinals against Kazakhstan's Yuldus Mamatkulova here today.

The Indian went down 9-15 to bow out of the event but was the only one from the 10-member team to fetch a medal.

This is India's worst performance at the mega-event as even five-time world champion M C Mary Kom (51kg) lost in the quarterfinals even though she managed to get an Olympic slot.

Kavita conceded a three-point lead in the fist round itself and even though she tried hard to make a comeback, she was left with a big margin to cover as she eventually went down 9-15.

The Indian boxing team thus rounded off a rather disappointing campaign as the last time it returned with just one medal from the event was in 2001 but at that time it was a silver.

India's best show was in the 2006 edition when the country topped the table with eight medals.
