Demand for library building in People's Park

Last Updated 28 May 2012, 16:58 IST

The City Central Library building that is going to come up on a 300ft X 400 ft inside the People’s Park, is being opposed by the members of the Mysore Grahakara Parishat and a few other organisations in the name of environment protection, is really very unfortunate said City Library Authority member and Kuvempu Vichara Vedike president S Channappa.

The library building which is located on  Sayyaji Rao Road in the Chamrajendra Technical Institute is very old and is in a dilapidated condition.

A decision to construct a building in the park was taken as early as in 1980s during the WorldKannada conference. A commercial complex was also planned  but a few organisations had opposed the move and a project had come to a standstill.

However, the department has made it clear that no commercial complex will come up in the area now. Hence, the chief minister had recently laid the foundation stone for the Rs 4.08 crore library building in the People’s Park, which is going to be constructed by KREDL, according to a press release from Channappa.

The building that is going to come up will be a heritage structure on the lines of the State Central library  building located inside Cubbon Park, Bangalore. The architecture, design, building plan is all ready which is already in the public domain.

The present library which is on the first floor is causing grave inconvenience to elders and physically challenged and besides there are no toilet facilities in the said premises, he said in the release.

Hence, it is very important, that the library members, readers, litterateurs and other concerned citizens should come together and welcome the move of the government to construct a building inside the People’s Park, which will in no way damage the trees or the environment and instead will be a beautiful place where everyone can come and relax and read the books, newspapers and magazines, the release said.

The supporters of the library building should give a befitting reply to the people who are opposing it, said Channappa in the release.
