Teen raped in police post in UP

One of the cops stood guard outside the room where she was assaulted

A teenager was allegedly raped in a police outpost in Uttar Pradesh’s Budaun district under the very nose of the cops by a friend of theirs.

One of the cops stood guard outside the room at Lalpul police outpost under Kotwali police station, where the 17-year-old girl was assualted by a youth identified as Gopal on Sunday night. Her cries did not move the policemen identified as Sumit Malik.

Three cops, including Sumit, were later placed under suspension, police officials said, adding that Gopal has been arrested. Sumit was also arrested while two other policemen were suspended.

According to police sources, the girl, a resident of neighbouring Rampur district, had come to pay obeisance at the famous ‘mazar’ (tomb) in Budaun with her maternal grandfather and some others. She was picked by policemen on Sunday night after some people allegedly found her in a “compromising position” with a member of her group.

Police brought her to the outpost and locked her in a room there. Her grandfather was also allegedly assaulted there and shooed away. Later, Gopal, who was Sumit’s friend, came there and he allegedly raped the girl while Sumit stood guard outside.

The victim’s family then lodged an FIR in morning, following which three cops who were on duty there were suspended. Sumit was later arrested. The victim has been sent for medical examination.

According to rules, police should have taken the girl to a ‘mahila thana’ (women police station).

Earlier too, the role of UP policemen had come under question.

Last year, a minor girl was found hanging in a tree on the premises of a police station at Lakhimpur-Kheri district. It was later revealed that a policeman had raped her before killing her. Then he hanged her body to make it look like a suicide.
