The State government will finalise the process of appointing 3,404 high school teachers and 1,764 pre-university lecturers by August this year, said Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, on Wednesday.

Kageri said 2.25 lakh applications have been received for the posts of high school teachers. Division-level entrance tests for the applicants will be conducted between June 23 and 26. As many as 95,000 candidates had applied for the posts of pre-university lecturers, the entrance tests for which would be held between June 12 and 21.

He said the process of recruiting 8,000 primary school teachers will commence once the proposal is cleared by the Finance department. More primary school teachers were required as the Right to Education (RTE) Act had changed the teacher-student ratio from 1:40 to 1:30. The government would even consider appointing guest teachers as a stop-gap arrangement till full-time teachers are appointed, he said.

The government will also open new schools on a need basis, he added. The government will soon launch a drive to enrol dropout children, the minister said.
