A Municipal Corporation of Delhi employee and his associate have been arrested for allegedly preparing forged birth certificates issued by the MCD, police said on Wednesday.

Jagbandhu Dass, a Shakti Nagar resident who works as a gardener with MCD’s Civil Line zone, and Ajeet Kumar Dass of Rajpura, were held on Monday over specific information that fake birth certificates could be obtained from a printing press on New Chandrawal Road in Sabzi Mandi by paying Rs 1,000.

“We sent a decoy customer over the tip-off and apprehended Ajeet when he handed over a birth certificate,” said Sanjay Kumar Jain, Deputy Commissioner of Police (crime and railways).

Police recovered 389 blank birth certificates and four readied ones from his possession along with seven fake stamps of sub-registrars and registrars of various zones in the capital.

Jagbandhu was arrested at his instance, and 11 readied birth certificates and 132 blank ones were recovered.

The duo was subjected to an intensive examination, during which it was revealed that in 2009 Jagbandhu met Ajeet, who works at the printing press in Subzi Mandi. Finding the business lucrative, he joined hands with him.

As Jagbandhu works with the MCD, he used to approach people who came for birth certificates.“Jagbandhu had asked Ajeet to prepare birth certificates on forms that he had procured from an MCD office,” Jain added.

Ajeet started printing forms when Jagbandhu’s stock ran out in 2010. “Since then they had been continuously preparing forged birth certificates and supplying them to various clients,” Jain said.
