“Mom, I don’t have anything to wear!” is a common cry among girls gearing up for a new academic year.

With colleges re-opening soon, wardrobe seems to have become the top priority for most students. “What do I wear? Will these shoes go with this top? How do I accessorise my outfit?” So many questions to tackle while getting ready. When it comes to clothes, boys have less to worry about. For them, it’s as simple as, “reach into the cupboard and wear what comes out first!”

In Bangalore, students enjoy being the trendiest in town. The latest fashion is always seen on a college-going student. Colleges like Christ University and St Josephs College of Commerce, follow a strict dress code. Here, girls are to wear only kurtas or chudidhars with dupatas while it’s formal wear for the boys.

Short kurtis with leggings are a hit among the girls. They fit the body perfectly and are very comfortable. Bright-coloured chudi tops with patialas are another favourite. The patialas are light and ideal for the summer. But variety in clothing for boys is limited to only formal-wear, but they do make the most of it.

Slim-fit, full-striped shirts with pleated cotton pants are commonly seen on campus.
But there are a few colleges  that don’t impose a dress code on it students.

Students of Mount Carmel and Jain University are allowed to dress in casuals. They have their limitations, with no sleeveless and tight- fitting clothes, but have much more room to experiment with. V-necks, t-shirts with witty lines and funny pictures, skinny jeans is what the boys of Jain college go for.

The girls favour printed t-shirts, short kurtis, long tops, jeggings and slim-fit jeans.  Mix-and-match kurtis are a popular choice as students have the choice to shake up their wardrobe and dress differently every day.

Ballet flats, converse shoes and flip flops are most suitable for girls for everyday college wear.  Boys usually incline toward formal and converse shoes.

Think the job is done after picking out the perfect outfit for the day? Think again. Accessories are a big part of the final ensemble. Boys usually finish their guise with a simple watch or a chain. Girls juggle with anklets, necklaces rings, etc.  Long chains with an owl pendant is a common accessory among girls.

Outside college, teenagers have much more choice and can dress freely. Summer dresses, shorts and bright tank tops for summer coupled with flip flops and shades fit the season. Boots are gaining popularity too.

They look the best when combined with jeans and dresses and are comfortable too. Scarves and long sweaters are a favourite in the winter.  Boys go for a more ‘ripped-jeans or baggy-pants’ look with loose t-shirts.

The mantra everyone seem to be following is “wear what’s comfortable.”
