Back to the grind!

SCHOOL BEGINS

Children in the City wore crisp uniforms and shiny shoes and carried new bags on the first day of their academic year. After a relaxed and somewhat study-free summer vacation, many kids were very enthusiastic to start school again, while the others cribbed.

Metrolife spoke to some of them about their experiences during the summer vacations and their views on returning to school.

“I look forward to school every year because we are shuffled into new sections and it’s so much fun to make new friends,” says Ria Bopanna, a class eight student of Bishop Cotton Girls’ School.

Agastya, a class seven student of Bishop Cotton Boys’ School, says he enjoys coming to school because holidays can get really boring after a while. He spent some of his time in Goa, attended summer camps in the City and learnt the guitar.

For some students, the summer holidays this time were all about studies and tuitions.

“I had many projects to work on during the holidays. So I didn’t really enjoy them. It feels great to return to school and meet my friends though,” says Rosmi Dominic, a class ten student of Sacred Heart Girls’ High School.

Tenth graders are usually expected to spend their holidays productively but some students managed to have fun along with studies.

Nomaan Zaid Khan and Umair Rizwan, who are now in class ten, did not only go for tuitions but also met friends, watched the IPL and played a lot of cricket and video games.

Almost everyone kept in touch with their friends through telephone and Facebook.

And many left the City to spend time with their grandparents. “I went to my grandmother’s place during holidays and couldn’t wait to come back and meet all my friends in school,” says Meghana, a class nine student of Baldwin Girls’ High School.

For parents, summer vacation is their only break from the morning rush. But now, it’s time to follow a new time table.

“I’m very relaxed when my daughter is at home. Now that she has started school, I have to prepare myself to keep up with time every morning,” says Saptha D, an accounts manager.

Some parents are excited to send their children to school for a whole new experience. Manmohan Anchan, whose son studies in the seventh grade, says, “Vacation time is very packed for me.

I have to take them around and keep them occupied. I’m more relaxed when the school is open.”
