Tuesday turns green on World Environment Day

Students plant saplings, participate in cycle rally to improve awareness

World Environment Day was observed in three districts of Hassan, Mandya and Chamarajanagar with district administrations and educational institutions making efforts to improve awareness about safeguarding the environment.

Zilla panchayat CEO S T Anjan Kumar warned that if measures are not taken to conserve environment, then the future generations would have to face nature’s brunt.

He was speaking at a programme organised by district administration to mark World Environment Day in Hassan on Tuesday.

“Our environment has been polluted in all possible ways. At present, even pure water is also unavailable. There is a need to immediately take measures to curb pollution and protect the environment,” he added.

ZP in association with forest department has planned to organise awareness programmes throughout the year. More than eight lakh saplings for producing biofuels would be planted in the district this year, he said. Judge Mustafa Hussain said environmental pollution is not limited to state, but has enveloped the entire world. It is every citizen’s duty to protect the environment.

Each family should aim to nurture at least one tree, he added. Judge K B Changappa, environmentalist H P Mohan, deputy conservator of forests Lakshmana, Padmaprabhu of environment department and additional deputy commissioner Gopalakrishna were present.

In Chamarajanagar

Deputy commissioner K R Sundar urged students to learn more about the environment. He urged them to take up programmes to improve awareness among people about the impact of water, noise and air pollution.

At a programme organised at C R Balarapatna High School in Chamarajanagar, headmaster B Sujay Kumar urged students to be involved in conservation of environment. Informing students that temperatures were increasing on earth due to loss in forest cover.

He said that human beings were continuously acting against nature and over-utilising natural resources.
Use of refrigerators and air conditioners has resulted in ozone layer being affected.

This has led to increased cases of cancer among people, he added.
District environment officer Shakunthalabai, headmaster Hanumashetty, Rangavahini association president C M Narasimhamurthy and Gangadhar were present.

In Mandya

Deputy commissioner P C Jaffer participated in a rally to mark World Environment Day in Mandya. Several schools and colleges in Mandya, Malavalli, Maddur, Pandavapura also celebrated the day to protect the environment.
