66.72 pc vote in south teachers' polls

Chnagar highest with 72.38 pc, Mysore lowest at 62.65

Election to the Legislative Council from south teachers’ constituency on Sunday was by and large peaceful.

The constituency comprising Mysore, Mandya, Hassan and Chamarajanagar districts recorded a turn out of 66.72 when the polling ended at the scheduled 4 pm. A total of 14,695 voters had exercised their franchise against 22,026 voters in total.

Comparatively, Chamarajanagar district recorded a highest of 72.38 per cent polling, closely followed by Mandya — 70.33, Hassan — 69.64 and Mysore — 62.65.

Incumbent MLC Marithibbegowda is contesting the polls on JD(S) ticket, while two-time loser S M Gurunanjaiah is trying his luck again as BJP candidate. M Lakshmana is the Congress nominee.

The three others are: Dyavappa Nayak from Samajvadi Janata Party and J Jayaraj and C Lakshmana — both independents.

In Mysore city, the polling opened on a dull note with not much voting witnessed in the first two hours from 8 am. The voting gained momentum from 10 am onwards, according to the percentage of voting of every two hours, released from the office of regional commissioner, also the returning officer.

At 10 am, the percentage of polling was calculated at 13.15, while at 12 noon it was 33.52 — an increase of 19.37. Till 2 pm, 52.56 per cent voters had exercised their franchise, with the percentage showing a jump of 19.04.

When the voting drew to a close at 4 pm, another 14.16 percentage of voters had polled — taking the total to 66.72 per cent.

Barring 10 am to 12 noon, when the percentage of voting had reached a high of 19.37, the remaining hours saw a decline comparatively according to statistics available.

When media persons visited a polling booth, 28, at People’s Park Girls School, till 10 am a measly 68 of the total 910 voters had polled their votes.

Similarly, at Bhagya Jyothi PU College in Gayatripuram (booth number 37), 170 of the total 989 had cast their votes till 11 am. At Geeta Shishu Shikshana Sangha in Siddartha Nagar (booth 29), it was 175 against the total 733 till 11.15 am.

At St Mary’s Convent on Ramanuja road (booth 30) 197of the total 707 voters had exercised their franchise till 11.45 am.

At Kaginele Educational Institutions in Kuvempunagar, where two booths had been opened, the polling till 2.15 pm was near 50 per cent.

In a booth, of the total 535 voters, 273 had polled and in another, of the total 534, 261 had polled.
