Sappers tame Students Union

A rampant Madras Engineer Group & Centre (MEG) registered a 4-1 victory over Students Union to continue their good run in the BDFA Super Division league at the Bangalore Football stadium on Thursday.

MEG with their third victory from four matches have nine points while Students Union crashed to their second defeat in four games to remain on six points.

Girish VK (2nd), Nguernilal Hamar (19th), Lokeshwar Singh (20th) and Suman Kumar (56th) were the goalscorers for the Sappers. Philip struck a consolation goal for Students Union in the 84th minute.

The first half was fast-paced as MEG stamped their authority with ease when Girish’s header, off a Vineet corner, found the back of the net in the second minute. Students had a chance when Vinod’s shot off a John pass went wide in the ninth minute.

In the 19th minute, Nguernilal smashed the second goal off a Girish pass to double the
lead for MEG. Lokeshwar’s strong strike in the 20th minute sent MEG’s supporters into raptures and stunned the Students.

Students brought in Avinash for Christopher in the 30th minute but there was no change in their fortunes. The last 15 minutes of the half saw Students trying to bounce back but were denied by a resolute MEG defence.

When hostilities resumed, MEG, with greater possession, attacked the Students defence. Lokeshwar and Nguernilal were buzzing on the wings along with a lively Charanjith. But it was Suman Kumar who made it 4-0 in the 56th minute as he tapped in off a Lokeshwar pass from the left. In the 73rd minute, Students saw a chance go abegging when Avinash’s shot from the edge of the box went over the crosspiece. MEG changed their goalkeeper in the 76th minute as Amit Shaw came in for Sharat Narayan.

Philip gave Students something to celebrate when he slotted the ball home off a John shot that ricocheted off Shaw in the 84th minute.
