A nude body of a teenage girl was fished out from a canal in Bawana in outer Delhi on Sunday morning, police said. Police suspects that the girl was raped before being smothered to death and dumped in the canal.

The victim has not been identified yet but investigators said she must be aged between 14 and 15 years.

“We received a call at police control room at 7:00 am on Sunday that a body of a teenage girl was lying in Bawana canal,” said a police officer.

Body fished out

A police team was sent to the spot and body was fished out, added the police officer.
There were no clothes on the girl’s body. She had the letters ‘NR’ and ‘RK’ inscribed on her right hand and ‘N’ inscribed on her left hand.

She wore an ‘Om’ locket in her neck and a gold earring in her right ear.

The body has been sent for autopsy to Sanjay Gandhi hospital.

“Looking at the condition of the body, rape cannot be ruled out. There are no external injury marks on the body, which makes the reason of death unclear,” said a senior officer.

We have registered a case and investigation is on, added the officer.

Police have also informed Haryana Police to check for the identification of the girl.

Local police stations across the capital have been informed.

“We are checking the list of missing persons to establish the identity of the deceased which is very important for us to crack the case,” said the officer.

Cause

The investigators said they do not suspect personal enmity to be the cause of murder.
The locket was intact with body so was the gold earring.

Police even ruled out robbery to be the cause.

“The victim might have been raped and then strangled,” added the officer.

About seeking help from Haryana Police, the investigator said many people come to visit the dam in Haryana and get drowned.

“A number of times, their bodies float to Bawana canal. Therefore, we are taking help of the Haryana Police as well,” said the officer.
