JOIN USIt's official, State's population is 6.10 cr
The Directorate of Census Operations on Thursday made public the official figures of the State’s population which now stands at 6.10 crore across the 30 districts.
Earlier, the directorate had released a provisional figure of the State’s population, placing it at 6.11 crore. The population in 2001 was 5.28 crore and the State has witnessed an increase of 1.81 crore in the past decade
In its abstract, the directorate has said that though the total Work Participation Rate (WPR), the rate of economic contribution to the State, increased by 1.1 per cent, the contribution of women has fallen marginally.
The contribution by women towards any economically productive activity has dropped by 0.1 per cent.
The classification by the directorate for calculating the work participation includes the main (workers who have been working for more than six months) and marginal (workers who have worked for less than six months) workers in the enumeration year in four sectors of cultivation, agriculture labour, household workers, industry and other workers, including white collared jobs.
Census data has suggested that there has been a sharp decrease in the women’s contribution in marginal workforce from 34.12 pc in 2001 to 26.61 pc in 2011.
It has further elaborated that the female participation in the cultivation sector and the agriculture labour sector has decreased by 10.93 pc and 3.12 pc respectively. One of the largest contributing factor for the decline of women WPR is due to the overall decline in these two sectors.
The census has suggested that there has been a drop of close to 5.9 pc in the cultivation sector and another 0.8 per cent decline in the agriculture labourers. According to the statistics, there has been a decrease of 6.4 pc points overall in agriculture as compared to 2001 data.
Literacy rate
Meanwhile, the silver lining for the State comes by way of the increase in the literacy rate and sex ratio. The literacy rate has crossed 75 pc in 2011, with the gender gap reducing to 14.49 per cent. The most literate district in the State is Dakshina Kannada (88.57 pc) followed by Bangalore (87.67pc) and Udupi (86.24 pc). The lowest literacy recorded was in Yadgir (51.83 pc) followed by Raichur (59.56 pc) and Chamarajanagar (61.43 pc).
The female literacy rate in seven districts is in the range of 71 pc to 80 pc, and above 80 pc in three districts. The least performance in female literacy has been in Raichur and Yadgir districts, where the number of illiterate women exceeds literates.
On the sex ratio, Karnataka has shown a marked improvement. The sex ratio currently stands at 973 females for every 1,000 males. Bangalore with its high growth rate and population density has the most skewed sex ratio at 916 females for 1,000 males.
The population in the City has been recorded at 96.21 lakh, with a growth of 47.18 pc in the last decade. At the other end, Chikmagalur has recorded a negative growth rate of 0.26 pc during the same period. The current population of Chikmagalur stands at 11.37 lakh.
