Anitha, 35, a resident of Bannahalli allegedly committed suicide by throwing herself and her son Prashanth, 6, into a well on Sunday.

Police suspect that she took the drastic step after being unable to face mounting debts.
Anitha and her husband, Munishamappa, were both manual workers and lived in Bannahalli in Tekal hobli. The couple had three children, Chandrika, 19, Radhika, 11, and Prashanth.

Radhika and Prashanth had been studying in the government school at Bannahalli, while Chandrika had recently married.

According to police, the parents had borrowed large sums of money for the wedding, resulting in the debts.

On Sunday, Anitha took Radhika and Prashanth to a well at the outskirts of the village. Once there, she told the children that they should climb down to drink water. Suspecting trouble, Radhika ran away, but Anitha succeeded in pushing Prashanth into the well, before jumping in herself.

Cowherds discovered the bodies later that evening. Residents of the village were informed. Masti sub-inspector Salim Nadaf and police staff members have registered a case.
