Autos with old meters to lose permits

Last Updated 13 July 2012, 18:46 IST

Here is a caution notice for autorickshaw drivers and owners who have not recalibrated their fare meters as per the revised rates fixed by the State government a few months ago.

The government is set to cancel permits of such rickshaws which are still running on metres with old fares. In a statement issued on Friday, controller of Legal Metrology has said that related circular has been sent to the Transport Department and erring autorickshaws will not be allowed to be used for public transport if they have not switched over yet to the new metres.

It can be noted that in March 2012, the State government had revised autorickshaw fare according to which the commuters are paying Rs 20 for the first 1.8-km, as opposed to earlier fare of Rs 17 for two km.

Subsequently, every km is costing the commuters Rs 11, when compared to the earlier fare of Rs 9 per km. The new order from the controller Of Legal Metrology has come in the wake of autorickshaw drivers fleecing customers with old meters and fake rate cards.
