Shop burgled under cops' nose

Ornaments stolen from showroom opposite police station
Last Updated 30 July 2012, 19:29 IST

Two men decamped with nearly seven kilogram of silver and gold ornaments worth around Rs five lakh from a jewellery shop on Kasturba Road early Monday morning.

The store lies close to the offices of the DCP (Central) B R Ravikanthegowda and Cubbon Park sub-division ACP D Devaraj. The Cubbon Park police station is located right opposite the showroom.

According to the police, the men, in their late 20s, struck at Amrapali Fine Jewels near Mahatma Gandhi statue and escaped with the ornaments kept in a showcase.

The burglary came to light on Monday morning when the shop owner opened the showroom.

Mitra Towers, which houses the showroom, is being renovated for some months now.

The construction work is underway on the second floor and workers are busy giving finishing touches. They work in shifts, added the police.

Theft captured in CCTV

On Sunday, the owner had downed the shutters around 7.30 pm as usual. The staff had closed all the doors before leaving the premises. CCTV cameras installed in the showroom have captured the two men gaining entry inside around 1.15 am.

The faces of the two men are not clearly visible in the CCTV footage. They had come inside through the elevated parking lot behind the building. They had gone to the first floor climbing onto a transformer and made a small opening in the glass window and unlocked it. They used the same route to escape with the booty. Surprisingly, the thieves have not touched diamonds, said the police.

The security guard Dhondina, who was sitting in front of the shop till late morning, did not hear any sound, said an officer.

Insiders’ hand

The police suspect the involvement of some insiders in the crime as the criminals knew that the window could directly take them inside the store. “The window lock is not visible from the outside. They have made a hole next to the lock and it clearly suggests that they knew the showroom pretty well,” said an investigating officer.

The police have questioned a few workers who were on the second floor. The officers are also collecting information on the staff who quit the showroom recently.
