Last Updated 30 July 2012, 19:33 IST

The Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) has sent out circulars to all colleges directing them not to collect any fee in excess of the sum decided as per the government notification.

“We will ensure that no college collects money from students in the name of extra fee,” said VTU vice-chancellor Maheshappa speaking to Deccan Herald. Violation of the directive would invite punitive action, including withdrawal of affiliation of colleges. The circular also states that upon specific complaints, the university will recommend to AICTE derecognition of any college collecting capitation fee.

On Monday, a meeting of the private colleges’ association and the education department was held to discuss the issue.

Officials who took part in the meeting with medical education minister S A Ramdas and higher education minister C T Ravi said the colleges had agreed to the norms and said that they would not collect any extra fee from students. Ravi, said that he would speak about the issue in the Council on Tuesday.

The government has fixed the fee for an undergraduate engineering seat in an aided college at Rs 18,090, the sum is Rs 36,090 in non-minority colleges and Rs 41,590 in minority institutions.
