Mary Com to get Rs 10 lakh from Tribal Affairs Ministry

London Olympic bronze medalist M C Mary Kom will be given a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh by the Tribal Affairs Ministry here on Tuesday.

The award will be given to her at a public reception to be organised by the Ministry where Tribal Affairs Minister K C Deo will felicitate the Olympian.

"M C Mary Kom is the recipient of Tribal Award for the year 2012. Recognising her achievement as an Olympic Bronze medalist, the Ministry has decided to honour her with a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh at a public ceremony," Ministry officials told PTI here.

This is a moment to recognise and applaud the efforts of a tribal person to bring glory to the nation, they said, adding "Mary's achievement will motivate several other tribal people to join sports".

Mary was also congratulated by the Tribal Affairs Minister over telephone after she won the medal.Five time World Boxing champion bagged the Olympic bronze medal on Wednesday.
