Man gets 7-yr jail term for dowry harassment

The fifth additional district and sessions court has sentenced two persons to imprisonment for dowry harassment and causing the suicide of a homemaker.

The convicted are Prashanth and his relative Shivaraj hailing from Davangere.

Prashanth married Sumalatha, daughter of Dr B K Virupaksha, on November 23, 2006.

During the marriage, he was given Rs one lakh and 200 grams of gold. Sumalatha’s family had accepted to hand over a site after marriage.

However, after marriage Prashanth, his mother Suvarna and Shivaraj are said to have harassed Sumalatha for dowry. Prashanth is said to have assaulted his wife regularly. Tired of the harassment, Sumalatha committed suicide on September 2, 2007.

Fifth additional district and sessions judge Lakshman Malavalli sentenced Prashanth to seven-year imprisonment and Rs 40,000 penalty and Shivaraj to three-year imprisonment and Rs 20,000 penalty.

Anti-dowry unit DySP B R Andal filed the chargesheet. Fifth additional government prosecutor P B Dharanna argued the case.
