3 rapes in a week; Bengal minister says state safest

West Bengal witnessed three rapes in the last seven days but the Transport Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Madan Mitra still has gall to say that the state was “number one” in maintaining law and order in the country.

A 26-year-old woman was allegedly drugged and raped by her landlord at Barasat in North 24 Parganas district, while a 30-year-old mentally challenged woman was raped and dumped on the Kona expressway. In another incident, a 19-year-old girl was raped at the posh Golf Garden area in the southern part of the city .

“If you make a comparative study of the law and order situation in West Bengal and other states, you will find we are number one among all the states,” Mitra told reporters on Wednesday.

Another senior TMC leader and Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee had said on August 18 that the law and order in the state is “a lot, lot more times” better than other states.
However, Leader of Opposition and CPM Politburo member Surya Kanta Mishra launched a scathing on the state government.

“Violence against women has become a regular incident in the state and we are having a government which is least bothered about it,” he said.
