The bodies of two girls were found at a pond at Banahalli village on Sunday morning.
They have been identified as Kavya, a 9th standard student, and Bindu, a 6th standard student at the Chinmayi School in Kolar. Both girls are from a teaching family.

Their father, Rajashekhar Murthy, a native of Boodikote in Bangarpet, was employed as a teacher at the Mageri government school in Bangarpet. Their mother, Lavanya, taught at a school at Hanchala in Bangarpet.

Police, who investigated the family’s home in Karanjikatte in Kolar, found no trace of Murthy and Lavanya, although their footwear and the family two-wheeler remained at home.

A list of Murthy’s creditors was also found, leading officers to suspect that couple may have also been killed. A manhunt, however, revealed no traces of their bodies. Police added that Murthy’s mobile phone has been switched off.

Police suspect the girls were killed elsewhere before being brought to the pond, which currently contains less than a foot of water. The bodies have been sent to the government hospital.

Several residents told police that Murthy may have incurred debts during the construction of their house. Relatives, however, contradicted this theory, and said that the family had little financial problems as the couple were both employed. The family is also said to own a site at Sahakar Nagar in Kolar.

Murthy’s colleagues, Mulbagal taluk Primary teachers’ Association president Jagannath and Bangarpet taluk Primary School Association president Appaji Gowda also visited the place. Circle Inspector Shivalkumar, Sub-Inspector Basavaraj also inspected the scene of the crime. Mulbagal police have registered a case.
