If there are 543 winners, there will be 7,527 losers!

That's the number of people who would turn up losers in the elections to Lok Sabha. A total of 8,070 candidates were in the fray for the 543 Lok Sabha seats.

The 'losers' would also have to live with the loss of crores of rupees spent in electioneering, while many would also be forfeiting security deposit ranging from Rs 5,000 (for SC/ST candidate) and Rs 10,000 for others.

Delhi-based Centre for Media Studies had estimated that Rs 10,000 crore (nearly USD two billion) would be spent by parties and candidates in this election, although official expenditure on polls was pegged at Rs 1,300 crore.
