Karnataka Yakshagana Academy President Prof M L Samaga in his piece of advise to the students asked them not to use arts for the purpose of gaining fame, but to satisfy one’s inner self.

He was addressing the students at the valedictory programme of three-day inter-collegiate cultural festival organised at Mangalore University, on Wednesday.

Giving a call for the students to bring out their hidden talents, he said in this age where self-magnifying has become order of the day, in contrast to the self-effacing tendency, the students will have to exhibit their talents to the outside world. One should participate in the extra-curricular activities not with an intention to grab prizes, but for the happiness of one’s self.

“Art is necessary in life for the peace of mind, but not for gaining fame. Don’t go behind the fame, if you go behind it, the true value or the essence of art is lost. Art should be used for the personality development,” he opined.

Turning critical over the redefined concept of art by the younger generation where loud music and lights take the centre stage, Yakshagana scholar said art should enhance the mellowness or softness in the audience mind.

Loud music and lights are crude and they have negative impact on the human sense organs and personality. “The youth should ensure that the artiste  is not lost amidst the pool of instruments and gizmos,” advised Samaga.
