Former minister and Congress district unit president B Shivaramu rained allegations on JD(S) leaders over irrigation land encroachment at Sooranahalli in Sakleshpur taluk.

He criticised that implementation of law has become weak in the district and alleged of hate politics among all land encroachments.

Shivaramu alleged that JD(S) leaders who are swearing by farmers’ children and depicting themselves as farmers’ saviours are ringing death knell to farmers.

The leaders who had planned for intensified protests in Belgaum against NICE road supporting farmers are mum over land encroachment issue in Hassan, he flayed.

Majority of the farmers in Sooranahalli supporting Congress is the main reason for land encroachment. About 88.2 acres of land were acquired in 1997 for various projects.

At the time when S M Krishna government was in power it was decided by the
Holenarasipur town panchayat that there is no need for lands for Ashraya scheme.

Accordingly the lands were denotified in the year 2000. But the local leaders have urged to cancel the denotification and alleged of irregularities between 2000 and 2009 related to land encroachment.

The case had gone to court and was criticised. Later, Supreme Court had directed to take steps after clarifying the original land owner.

Moreover, the town panchayat had given a report that the land is not under their limits.

But the vested interests had exerted pressure and had given a notice that the land is still under the purview of town panchayat and has wrung the deathknell of the farmers, he accused.

The lands are worth lakhs of rupees but the government has fixed just Rs 59,000 only.

Hate politics is behind all the development projects including lift irrigation, S M Krishna city project and others, he alleged.

Already 30 farmers have approached the court and the party will support them, he said.
