Highlighting issues creatively

Eye Catching
Last Updated 18 September 2012, 14:28 IST

Contemporary issues concerning the society have been depicted in a unique and innovative way by five artists through their paintings and sculptures at an ongoing exhibition titled ‘Unbiased Apartment’ in the City.

Though the exhibition has been labelled thus, the artists have chosen a variety of themes to reflect their concerns on different issues in society.

A few that instantly catch the eye are sculptures of monkeys sitting on air-conditioned cabinets and scooters representing intrusion of the human being on forest areas and a sitting tiger under an umbrella revealing the dire need to save nature.

‘In the concrete jungle’ by Rajesh Kumar Sharma is about human encroachment on animals’ space. “The theme is simple – save nature. Animals are coming to cities because we have encroached their spaces by cutting down trees for buildings,” he said. He has used fibre and leather to create his monkeys.

‘Unbiased Apartment’ which also includes works by Dolly Dutta, Kalyan Mukherjee, Tarun Maity and Suvajit Samanta was inaugurated by well-known artist Niren Sengupta at Shridharani Gallery. It represents the approach that needs to be taken towards resolving these issues.

Suvajit Samanta’s work ‘Save me’ and ‘Beauty of nature’ has upheld the need to preserve the endangered flora and fauna. A sitting tiger under an umbrella, made from steel and bronze, is an example. It took him a year create it. “The tiger represents nature, while the umbrella is a metaphor for protection.

I miss nature around me and my works reflect it,” said Suvajit. His works also reflects the daily life. His creation a telephone titled ‘Communication’ shows how telephones have made their lives so easy in today’s world.

Tarun Maity has attempted to visually represent sound with an artwork ‘quack quack’. Gramophone at the mouth of a duck is his way of showing how sound will look.

Dolly has created an almost theatrical scene about the interiors of elusive life of prostitutes and their journey and other themes of daily life of modern society using bright colours and strokes. Such themes bear witness to a unique journey of
modernity.

The exhibition will continue till September 21.
