Cops help crime-prone youth get jobs

Last Updated 24 September 2012, 20:39 IST

Under a special initiative “Yuva” of Delhi Police, around 20 boys and girls from economically weaker families have got jobs in past two months in food joints such as Pizza Hut, Cafe Coffee Day and  VLCC fitness centre.

These youths were first trained in specific fields following which they were given jobs. In collaboration with a couple of non-government organisations (NGOs), Delhi Police successfully placed these kids after 15- to 30-day training programme. Calling it a success, the officials have now planned to offer courses in mobile repairing and automobile soon.

At Janakpuri, the crime against woman cell recently observed that most complainants belong to underprivileged families and were financially dependent on either their husbands or on parents. The cell also discovered that most of the female offenders were driven to crime owing to abject poverty.

Taking note of this, the police department, in its bid to bring a reform of sorts, wooed these girls to join a training programme where they can learn beauty courses from experts at VLCC—a renowned chain of fitness and beauty clinics—after which they can be placed somewhere. “Around 14 girls showed interest and joined the training course, out of which four got selected for job,” additional commissioner of police (west) V Renganathan told Deccan Herald.

The officer said the idea of providing jobs was mooted early this year when the police officials at Ranhola found that youth from resettlement colonies were indulging in petty crimes due to poverty. To take them out of the vicious circle of poverty and crime, police department organised a crash course in English-speaking for the crime-prone youngsters.

“Around 46 boys and girls participated in the course, out of which 14 got jobs in companies such as Pizza Hut and Cafe Coffee Day,” said Renganathan.

On the same lines, a programme was organised for the girls where they were trained in mehndi decoration of palms and feet. Fifteen completed the training. "During festivals or marriage ceremonies, these girls can make decent money," said the officer. “The main purpose of organising such programmes was to make these kids independent.”
