Unravelling a heritage

To celebrate its 20 years, the Crafts Council of Karnataka will be conducting Vastrabharana 2012, an exhibition and sale of handcrafted textiles and jewellery, at Chitrakala Parishat. The exhibition will be inaugurated on September 29, 11 am by Jaya Bachchan.

The exhibition is an attempt to keep alive the tradition of ‘sari’ culture and create awareness of the country’s textile heritage. This year, the focus will be on the lambadi embroidery, handcrafted by the Sandur Kushala Kala Kendra crafts people, on the cotton Gadag saris of North Karnataka.

Then, there is the traditional collection of kanjivaram saris of Tamil Nadu, mangalgiri saris of Andhra Pradesh, laheriyas of Rajasthan, ilkal saris of North Karnataka, apart from pochampally hand-woven ikat, cotton and silk paithanis, uppadas, khadis and gadwals.

One can also find the famous ajrak and mashroo woven textiles from Ajrakpur-Kutch as well as the bagh prints of Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh. The dabu prints of Chaubandi, Kaladera, Rajasthan with natural dyes have been painstakingly created and will be one of the highlights. The exhibition will be open from 10.30 am to 7.30 pm till October 3.
