Rs 500 crore drug, ammunition seized from Samjhauta Express

Security agencies in Punjab on Monday recovered huge quantities of drugs, estimated to cost over Rs 500 crore in the international market, from the Delhi-bound Samjhauta Express, the peace train plying between Delhi and Lahore. 

Besides drugs, ammunition too was recovered. The recovery was made during the checking of the train by the security personnel deployed at the Attari check-post in Punjab. The drugs, neatly packed in 101 packets weighing one kg each, had Pakistani markings in Urdu on them. Sources in the intelligence suspect that the drugs were being pushed into India through Samjhauta Express for smuggling to India and other countries. Nearly 500 rounds of ammunition have also been confiscated by the security agencies.

The incident came to light when goods were being off loaded at the Attari border in India from the train. Goods were taken for storage in nearby warehouses. Its there that security officials suspected drugs inside the consignments. On opening the goods, over a hundred packets of heroine and ammunition were found. Meanwhile, the police Monday also recovered heroin worth Rs 10 crore in another border district Ferozepur. The contraband recovered too was kept in packets weighing 1 kg each.
