Elderly man shoots himself dead

Last Updated 17 October 2012, 20:41 IST

A 65-year-old ex-village chief shot himself dead with his licensed revolver in south Delhi on Wednesday morning, police said.

Mahinder Singh Tokas was the former head of Munirka Village. After Tokas returned from his morning walk he called his elder son and asked him for the licensed revolver, saying it needed servicing.

A domestic help was sent to DDA flats in Munirka to get it.

“When his servant returned, he asked for his medicines. He then took out his gold chain and rings and asked his servant to keep them in the locker. After that he asked for breakfast. When the servant left him alone, he took out his revolver and shot himself dead,” said a senior police officer.

When the domestic help heard the gunshot he rushed to the room to find Tokas in a pool of blood.

He informed Tokas’ son and police.

Tokas had died by the time police reached the spot.

His body was sent to All India Institute of Medical Sciences for post-mortem. Police have recovered a suicide note from the spot, in which Tokas had written that he loved his kids and did not hold anyone responsible for his death.

During investigation police found that he suffered from depression and did not interact much with his family members.

For the last two years he lived alone and had stopped visiting the office of the trust run by him to look after cows, his family members said.
