Indian marriages are based on moral, social values

Last Updated 19 October 2012, 19:37 IST

The Indian marriage system has high moral and social values, said director for collegiate education Chikkathimmaiah.

He was speaking at a national seminar organised at the Government Arts College in association with University of Mysore PG centre. “The ideals of dharma, artha, kama and moksha provide a strong foundation for marriages in India. But, the foundation itself is becoming weak due to the effects of westernisation and globalisation,” he said.

Pointing out that divorce cases are on the rise in India, Jacob John Kattakayam from Kerala University said globalisation is the main culprit but even the collapse of joint family system is also rendering marriages fragile. He lamented over the existence of child marriages in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh.

MLA H S Prakash called upon to wage a war against child marriages and Devadasi system. V Suneetha, Krishnegowda, H V Lakshminarayan, G D Narayan and others were present on the occasion.
