Slumdweller beaten to death

Last Updated 05 November 2012, 19:16 IST

A 23-year-old man was beaten to death by a gang of six at Koramangala 8th Block Monday evening.

The deceased is Purushottam, from the Rajendra Nagar slum. Sharath Kumar (24), from the same area, was seriously injured in the attack. Purushottam worked at a sweet shop in Koramangala, while Sharath Kumar is a college dropout.

Purushottam and Kumar were chased down by a gang of six boys around 7 pm. As the two entered the Anjaneya Temple Road in Koramangala 8th Block, the gang attacked the two with hockey sticks. Purushottam was hit repeatedly on his private parts and he collapsed. Kumar has sustained severe head injuries.

The gang fled the place after the attack. Soon, residents gathered there and alerted the police. By the time the police arrived, Purushottam was dead. They rushed Kumar to Nimhans Hospital for treatment. Purushottam's body has been shifted to Victoria Hospital for autopsy.

Koramangala police have registered a murder case and are investigating. Police sources told Deccan Herald that the murder may be the result of the dispute between two gangs that started during the Annamma festival held in Koramangala 8th Block Sunday evening. Some boys from Rajendra Nagar, including Purushottam and Kumar, had created a ruckus when they tried climbing onto the stage and dancing in an inebriated state.

This had resulted in a tiff between the gangs from Rajendra Nagar and Koramangala 8th Block.

On Monday evening, Purushottam and Kumar entered Koramangala with an intention to attack the other gang. But the duo were overpowered, resulting in Purushottam’s death, police said.
