Ten competitors, including leading swimmer Fariha Zaman, had to remain mere spectators at the LNCPE Swimming Pool because of the SFI decision.

The Assam Swimming Association and the ad-hoc committee formed to run the sport in the state had turned up for the championship with separate teams.

“The term of the ASA expired in 2005 so they are now unofficial team. An ad-hoc committee has the control of swimming activity in Assam. Unfortunately, as per a court order the committee’s team did not have the right to participate in the event. So, we denied participation to them,” said SFI secretary, Virendra Nanavati.
