Sensex sheds 148 pts

Key benchmark indices, on Thursday, logged declined for fifth straight session to settle at their lowest closing level in two weeks as weak global stocks weighed on sentiment adversely due to nagging worries over US fiscal problems.

The Sensex at BSE remained in negative mode throughout before ending at 18,471.37 — a loss of 147.50 points or 0.79 per cent, which was the lowest closing for Sensex from October 30, 2012 (at 18,430.85).  

Similarly, the 50-unit index of the National Stock Exchange, Nifty lost 35.95 points, or 0.63 per cent to close at 5,631 points. From a 52-week high of 19,137.29 on October 5, 2012, the Sensex has declined 665.92 points or 3.47 per cent and from a 52-week low of 15,135.86 on December 20, 2011, the Sensex has risen 3,351.51 points or 22.03 per cent.

The market breadth was negative as 10 out of 13 sectoral indices on the BSE were in the red. From broader markets, the BSE Mid-Cap index fell 0.17 percent and the BSE Small-Cap index gained 0.28 percent as both these indices outperformed the Sensex.

With this, domestic shares dropped for the fifth day in a row and the bellwether index of BSE had declined 431.04 points or 2.28 per cent in the past five trading sessions.

The Sensex has surged 3,016.45 points or 19.51 per cent in calendar 2012 so far (till 15 November 2012), while it has declined 34.01 points or 0.18 per cent in this month so far.
