Kashmir witnesses cold wave conditions

Last Updated 20 November 2012, 19:48 IST

Despite having a sunny day on Monday, an intense cold wave has gripped Srinagar and other parts of the Kashmir Valley with minimum temperature dropping to sub zero Celsius.

Met officials said Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 0.2 degree Celsius on Monday night while world famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir was the coldest place in the Valley with minus temperature of 5.5 degree Celsius.

Ski resort Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded minus 3.7 degree Celsius while the Valley’s gateway town, Qazigund, recorded minus 1.8 degree Celsius on Monday, they added.
Upper reaches of Gulmarg, Gurez, Sonamarg Banihal and Kupwara had received snowfall on Saturday and Sunday while plains received slight rainfall on Sunday.

Despite the slight drizzle, the dry atmospheric conditions have resulted in a sharp increase in common ailments like allergies, cold, fever, chest infections and soar throat.

“There is a huge rush of patients with soar throat and chest infections for the last 15 days. This is normal in this season as people catch cold and fever easily due to dry weather conditions,” said Dr Salim of state-run Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital.
