CPM leader Mani arrested

Senior CPM leader M M Mani, who played a key role in establishing the party in the Idukki district, was arrested early on Wednesday in connection with the murder of a Congress worker nearly 30 years ago.

A police team led by four DySPs arrested Mani from his house at Kunchithannilaid.  He was taken to the Nedumkandom police station and later produced before the court which remanded him till December 4.

Later in the day, the court rejected his bail plea. Mani had served as the CPM Idukki district secretary for five terms and stepped down after being made an accused in the case. The case regarding CPM cadres shooting dead a Congress worker and local INTUC leader Ancherry Baby on November 19, 1982, had been disposed of and all the accused were acquitted for want of evidence.
