With Christmas and New Year in the offing, district police are mulling to rein in illegal activities in the name of resorts and clubs.

SP R Dileep told media at his office on Sunday, he has instructed the officers to make a recce of such recreation centres. There are complaints from the vigilant public about the mushrooming of resorts and clubs on the outskirts in disguise of farm houses.

According to them, such activities in the name of recreation are being run in isolated places. It will be meticulously planned facility with they having a clear view of the sight giving them ample time to run at the time of raid. What comes handy to them is the secret doors. As a guard men and dogs will be manning the area.

“Vehicles will be moving to and fro after dark fuelling suspicion,” said R Dileep quoting a complainant.

To play it safe, a coupon system is introduced instead of staking money for gambling. The SP said such systems are construed as ‘instrumental gambling’ and it’s also not allowed in the ambit of law.

Describing the nature of recreation clubs complying with the norms, the SP said “carrom, chess and card games are allowed, but sans the bet”. He also disclosed that, “as an extended cover, they (those who run the clubs) entertain influential men and take their names to evade police action”.

However, the officer said it’s too early to give accurate information on the exact number of resorts and clubs and also individuals running the show.

The SP appealed to the people aware of such nefarious activities to inform the nearest police stations or the police control room.
