In the Bangalore South constituency where the voter turnout was merely 44.73 per cent, Ananth Kumar garnered 4,37,953 votes against the 4,00,341 votes for his rival Krishna Byregowda. The victory comes in the wake of speculations that independent candidate, Captain Gopinath would make a dent in Ananth Kumar’s prospects by dividing the Brahmin votes. As it turned out, Capt Gopinath could attract only 16,383 voters, lower than even what JD(S ) candidate Prof Radhakrishna could garner. The latter got 30,045 votes.

A look at the assembly constituency-wise break-up of votes shows Ananth Kumar getting the maximum votes from Bommanahalli, Basavanagudi, Govindraj Nagar, Vijayanagar and Padmanabhanagar. He came second to Krishna Byregowda in Chickpet, BTM Layout and Jayanagar Assembly segments.

But, compared to 2004 elections, the victory margin is down for Ananth Kumar. While his victory margin against M Krishnappa was 62,271 last time, the margin is down to 37,612 votes this time.

It was like winning a battle but losing a war Ananth Kumar. His fifth consecutive victory was marked by a low-key celebration. The shadow of the party’s poor performance at the Centre loomed large. He made a silent move from the counting centre at the SSMRV College.
