The Supreme Court on Monday said it will examine a PIL seeking abolition of caste, region and religion based recruitment in Indian Army’s Maratha, Jat, Dogra, Garhwal and other regiments on the ground that it was violative of fundamental rights of citizens.

A bench of justices K S Radhakrishnan and Dipak Misra asked Solicitor General Rohinton Nariman to assist the court in the petition filed by Haryana-based medical practitioner I S Yadav.

The petition sought direction for formation of a national recruitment policy which would ensure selection on merit in the Indian Army resulting in the emergence of a monolithic force as being done in Indian Air Force and Indian Navy.

Senior advocate S Balakrishnan, submitted, the government claimed Indian Army to be truly secular, but there are regiments like the Rajput regiment., etc which is unhealthy and against the interest of the Army.
