Friends’ plans to celebrate birthday of a pal in Talkad ended on a tragic note, when the car they were travelling in ploughed into the empty Varuna canal, killing one on the spot and leaving four others injured, between Varuna and Varkodu villages on Mysore-T Narsipura road on Sunday.

The deceased has been identified as Nagarjun (19), son of Umesh, a guard with the South Western Railway (SWR) Mysore division and resident of railway colony, Vijayanagar, in the city. Nagarjun was in his second year of engineering (electronics and communication) at Vidyavardhaka College of Engineering (VVCE), Gokulam.

Birthday girl

The injured are Sanjana, 19, the birthday girl and daughter of Shivakumar, ‘K’ block, Kuvempunagar, Anushree, 19, daughter of Keshav, Haregudda, Moodigere taluk, Chikmagalur district, both classmates at JSS Women’s Polytechnic, Mysore, Vikas, 22 years, son of late Udaykumar, working with M S Constructions and a resident of railway colony, Vijaynagar and Yogesh Rao alias Balaji, 23 years, son of Anil Kumar, electrical contractor at Metagalli Industrial Area.

Police said Yogesh Rao had borrowed the car from his friend for the day.
He was at the wheels, while Nagarjun was sitting to his left in the front row. The remaining three were in the back row.

Lost control

Yogesh Rao seems to have lost control over the steering. He took to the left side of the road shoulder (mud road), driving straight into the canal through the gap between the bridge and bushes.

The honking horn of the car, owing to the impact, alerted those nearby who rushed to help the victims.
A pot of water was also given to rev up the injured before rushing them to the Cauvery Hospital at Yaraganahalli, in an ambulance.

Chairman of the hospital Dr Chandrashekar and orthopaedic surgeon Dr Manjunath Bhargav told Deccan Herald, Vikas has suffered a head injury, Yogesh Rao fracture in a leg and pelvis, Anushree femur fracture (long bone in upper part of the leg) and swelling in left part of the chin and Sanjana femur fracture.
South police circle inspector Nemiraj, SI Venkateshaiah and others visited the spot.
A case has been registered and investigations are on.
