Dugard is seen smiling broadly on the magazine’s cover. In the image she closely resembles pictures from her childhood that have been shown around the world since she was freed seven weeks ago — but with wavy brown hair instead of the straight blond locks of her youth.

Meanwhile, sources told Reuters that Dugard’s mother, Terry Probyn, has reached a book deal with publisher Random House. The book will apparently chronicle Dugard’s abduction, Probyn’s nearly two-decade search for her daughter and the family’s emotional reunion.

Dugard, 29, did not grant People an interview but told the magazine in a brief statement: “I am so happy to be back with my family. Nothing is more important than the unconditional love and support that I have from them.” Photos inside the magazine show her smiling with family members and riding a horse at the undisclosed California location where she has lived since gaining her freedom.

Dugard’s two daughters — believed to be fathered by her kidnapper — are in the photographs. The girls, 15-year-old Angel and 11-year-old Starlit, were photographed from behind and their faces cannot be seen.

People spokeswoman Claudia DiRomualdo said Dugard approached the magazine with the pictures, which were taken by an independent photographer. Dugard was 11 years old in 1991 when she was snatched from a street near her South Lake Tahoe home while walking to a school bus stop.
