Art gallery with a difference

Last Updated 28 January 2013, 16:51 IST

Most of the art galleries in the country do not have windows and are lit with artificial lighting and temperature is kept pleasant with air conditioning.

However, in a place where power cuts are common, maintaining an art gallery depending on electricity most of the times is difficult.

A solution to this problem could be the art gallery coming up on Dr Shivram Karanth Balbhavan Samiti premises in Puttur. This gallery has over 20 widows, aesthetically placed and adequate ventilation that allow natural light and breeze to flow in. This full-pledged gallery is coming up under the aegis of the district administration and is being built at a cost of Rs 80 lakh from the Chief Minister's special fund.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Assistant Commissioner (Puttur) H Prasanna said that the fund was granted to construct a skating rink for children. However, the district administration decided to make the best use of the funds and constructed an art gallery and library which has a spacious skating rink on the roof.

The 15,000 square feet gallery has more than 20 windows and the wall in between the windows will be used to display paintings. Two huge walls on  either side of the gallery will be designed with murals.

The gallery will also have a small library which will have all literary work created by Karanth, he said. The skating rink on the roof of the gallery, has a cement fence for the safety of the children, he added. The gallery construction started about one and a half years ago and the construction work was given to a private agency, 'Puttur Masterplan'. The gallery will be ready in a couple of months. However, the inauguration will take place only after two art camps. The paintings from these camps will be displayed at the gallery, he said.
