In a press note, Mission Chairman Anand A S has said that the Centre before deciding to release the GM brinjal should consult all the states. The new variety would not only have adverse effect on health, it would also destroy the local brinjal varieties. It would make farmers depend on multinational companies for seeds and the cost of the cultivation itself would go up.
The Mission would soon organise a workshop to discuss GM crops. The Sate government has authorised the Mission to take a suitable decision on GM crops, Anand said.
