<p>A Sub-Inspector of Kolkata police was shot dead by some miscreants at Harimohan College in the Garden Reach area of the city on Tuesday morning. <br /><br /></p>.<p>The incident occurred during the filing of nomination papers in the upcoming college election.The clash started early in the morning when supporters of the Chatra Parishad, the students’ union of the Trinamool Congress got engaged in fracas and they attacked one another with bombs, bricks and guns. <br /><br />Tapas Chowdhury, a sub-inspector of Garden Reach police station, was caught in the crossfire and he was shot on the left side of his chest. Chowdhury was immediately rushed to nearby Calcutta Medical Research Institute but later in the day he succumbed to his injuries. <br /><br />According to sources in the police, the Chatra Parishad was led by local goon Mukhtar and Trinamool Congress was led by local councillor Md Iqbal alias Munna. “The area was tense from a day before because three students- Nur Alam, Arijit Basu, and Avijit Sil were making bombs and one bomb exploded. As a result all the three students were injured,” a senior police officer said. <br /><br /> “Later, while investigating the case, we came to know that the bombs were made to scare the students during elections. Naturally a huge amount posse of police was deployed to avoid any kind of untoward situation,” the officer added. <br /><br />However, the RAF has been deployed in Kolkata and the police have been put on alert. <br /><br />Senior CPM leader Mohammad Salim accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of mishandling the situation and alleged that she had made it free for all in the state. State urban development minister Firhad Hakim said it was a conspiracy of the Congress and the CPM and accused hands of local goons behind the incident.</p>
