From gol gappa and vada pav eating competitions to live cookery classes and cultural dance performances, the upcoming Great Indian Food Festival (GIFF) will have all of this and much more to offer. Being organised in the national capital for the first time, the fest will also provide a platform to some well-known vendors from places like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Mumbai, Allahabad, Amritsar, and Hyderabad to showcase their culinary expertise.

“Though Indian food is itself great in terms of variety, taste, budget and diversity, people are still moving towards western food, and have started believing that Indian food has limited variety. We want to showcase maximum variety of regional Indian food to attract food lovers back to Indian food,” Sagar Gupta, organiser, tells Metrolife.

He further says that the festival also intends to give food lovers a chance to savour famous street food items from various states at one place. “The USP of the festival is that there will be authentic state-wise specialties and also live cookery classes with chefs about Rajasthani, Gujarati and Sindhi food. There will also be ice cream making workshops,” he adds.

The festival will also have on sale biscuits from Karachi Bakery (Hyderabad), Panchhi Petha (Agra), Kashmiri Saffron and Kahwa from Kanwal (Jammu and Kashmir), murukku and banana chips from Sarvom (Kerala) and bamboo Shoot pickle from Meira foods (Manipur), among other specialties.

But who will these “famous food vendors” be? “They are those vendors who are famous for their expertise in regional food in their respective areas. For example, a vada pav vendor who is famous in Mumbai and a Rajasthani food vendor who is famous in Jaipur and Udaipur,” Gupta says. The festival will be held on January 23 and 24 at Dilli Haat, Pitampura.
