A law student, who was allegedly forced to ingest poison by her boyfriend’s family, died in a hospital in the City on Thursday.

Police said the victim, Manjula, 24, a second year law student at a private college in Anekal, was in love with her batchmate Mahendra (25) for the last three years and they were residing at Bommasandra.

Threatened family

Their families had no objections to their marriage till recently, her mother Siddalingamma said.

However, a month ago, Mahendra changed his mind and told Manjula that he was not interested in marrying her, she added.

“My daughter insisted and begged him not to break his promise of marrying her,” the mother said. But Mahendra did not relent.

Instead, on several occasions, Mahendra and his younger brother Madhu had called Manjula and her family,  threatening them with dire consequences, if she did not stop contacting them, the police said. On Monday, Mahendra called Manjula over the phone expressing his desire to marry her.

Glad that Mahendra finally agreed to marry her, Manjula immediately left for his house, the mother said.

“After about an hour, my younger son Arun received a call from Madhu, saying that they have poisoned Manjula and admitted her to Kiran Mazumdar Cancer hospital,” Siddalingamma said.

When she went to the hospital, Manjula was lying unconscious in the intensive care unit. Her health deteriorated and she died on Thursday morning, said Siddalingamma, who had lost her husband some years ago.

The Hebbagodi police have registered a case against Mahendra, Madhu and their father Lingappa on the charges of cheating and murder.
