The Mysore City Corporation elections has thrown up many interesting candidates. One among them is a PhD student Ashwini Sharath. Ashwini who is pursuing her PhD thesis in Education at University of Mysore under her guide Prahlad of Regional Institution of Education (RIE), has completed her MA, MEd from Bangalore University.

She is BJP’s candidate from ward no 50 (comprising Gandhinagar and Karunapura), which is reserved for SC women.

Actively involved in social work, she is the president of Dr B R Ambedkar Stree Deepa Mahila Sangha. Her poll priorities include education and women’s safety issues.

She said that though both Gandhinagar and Karunapura come under the city limits, they were deprived of the required amenities and benefits that an urban area enjoys. The ward has schools, but no pre-university or first grade colleges, she added. The two parks in the area are inaccessible, making it a hub of illegal activities. “The park areas are  infamous for eve-teasing. As a woman, I want to ensure safety of the women in my ward. My education is my biggest plus,” she told Deccan Herald.

She said that the minority community in the ward had been worst hit. The ward, which lacks an underground drainage system is also plagued by acute water shortage garbage related problems.

Her other priorities pertaining to the ward include, ensuring ration cards to all, pension to senior citizens, health facilities and good roads.
With a passion for sports, Ashwini also wants to see the football team in the locality gain state level recognition.

She said that she derives her inspiration from her husband Sharat Satish, who has been a BJP worker for over a decade, and a dedicated social worker.
