St Claret College recently hosted its annual cultural fest, Mayurika.

More than 12 colleges participated in the extravaganza, which included around 10 events. The participanting teams made sure they put in their best in each of the competitions.

Each and every aspect of the fest, such as sponsorship, organising events and inviting the other colleges, was tackled by the students
themselves.

Ruby, the president of the student body of the college, feels that fests give students a lot of confidence. “We started work on the fest almost a month in advance and it is a lot of responsibility. And at the end of the fest, you learn how to deal with people.
Getting sponsorship is a task in itself.”

Angela, from the department of psychology and the cultural coordinator of the fest, points out that the faculty members always work together with the students and guide them in the right direction. “There must be a balance between academics and extracurricular activities and we attempt to blend the two. Fests like this one give students a lot of confidence. This is the only time of the year when all the students come out and participate,” says Angela.

The participants from the other colleges feel that inter-college events not only help build contacts but give one an idea about the culture of other colleges.

Anne Marie, a second-year BCom student of St Francis De Sales College in Electronic City, participated in the eastern group dance. She says, “The crowd is brilliant and very encouraging. We dragged along the really shy girls to come and be part of the team. Fests are something we look forward to.”

Chinmaya, a first-year commerce student of MS Ramaiah Degree College, who participated in music and dance events, feels, “Fests show us where we stand in terms of our creativity. It challenges us at every step and encourages healthy competition among students.” Aishwarya, a student of ASC College on Chord Road, adds, “Fests help bring out the hidden talents in students. A lot of students who don’t participate in class come out and support us with their
participation.”
