M'lore varsity council okays ` 5.76 cr deficit budget

Scholarships to encourage students to take up basic sciences: VC

The Academic Council of Mangalore University has okayed the deficit budget of Rs 5.76 crore for the year 2013-14 here on Saturday.

In the fourth general meeting of the Academic Council held at the new senate hall, Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor Prof T C Shivashankaramurthy said that the proposed income would be Rs 168.97 crore and expenditure would be Rs 174.73 crore, thus indicating a deficit of Rs 5.76 crore.

Income, expenditure

He said under non planned grants, the university is expected to get an income of Rs 124.89 crore in 2013-14. It was Rs 108.37 crore during 2012-13.

The income has been increased by Rs 16.52 crore. Under non planned expenditure, the expenditure would be Rs 116.19 crore.

It was Rs 105.18 crore during 2012-13. Under planned grant, the income for the year 2013-14 would be Rs 44.07 crore while it was Rs 31.27 crore during 2012-13.

The expenditure would be Rs 58.54 crore.

Devt work

The VC said that to encourage basic sciences among students, the Mangalore University will start scholarships for the students in basic science and mathematics at the undergraduate level. The budget has earmarked Rs 20 lakh for the same. Scholarship of Rs 5,000 would be given for 400 meritorious students. A sum of Rs 700 lakh has been earmarked for the construction of Pariksha Bhavan in the university campus.

Other proposed development work are D model quarters—Rs 80 lakh, renovation of roads in the campus—Rs 150 lakh, new block at University College, Mangalore—Rs 110 lakh, basic infrastructure facilities at University College, Mangalore—Rs 100 lakh and FMKMC College, Madikeri—Rs 25 lakh.

A sum of Rs 29.62 crore has been earmarked for the development work in the budget.

PG Centre

A sum of Rs 8 crore has been earmarked for the development of PG centre at Chikkaluvaru in Kodagu. The work on science block will be ready by April.

The work on teachers quarters, ladies hostel and boys hostel, arts and commerce block, will be completed shortly. Once, the work on PG centre is completed, then post graduation in microbiology, biochemistry will be shifted to the science block.

If everything goes as per the plan, then PG in chemistry, economics and commerce will be started in the academic year. The Mangalore University is also planning to start three PG courses —English, Economics and Political Science in University College at Mangalore. 

The team constituted by the Mangalore University has inspected land at Uppur and Belapu for the setting up of PG centre at Udupi. The team is likely to submit its report to the University before March 21, said the VC.
