Amid high drama and confusion, candidature of G Manjunath, who had filed his nomination paper as an Independent candidate, has been accepted.

It may be recalled here that Manjunath had also filed papers as the nominee of the Congress candidate. However, there were difference of opinion from various quarters that a caste certificate submitted by him should not be accepted.

On Thursday, scrutinisation of papers which began on Thursday at 11 am went on till 2 pm. Of the 40 nomination papers submitted, except for nine — including that of Manjunath — all the nominations were accepted.

A retired judge and a few advocates from Bangalore had arrived at the mini Vidhana Soudha to present Manjunath’s case. A heated debate could be heard from inside the Soudha as the lawyers presented Manjunath’s case. Sensing trouble, police and Para-military personnel intervened and brought the situation under control. This also delayed the scrutinisation process.

By evening, thousands of Manjunath’s supporters had gathered at the Soudha premises to know the status. As Returning Officer announced that Manjunath’s nomination (submitted as Independent candidate) has been accepted, his supporters burst crackers and took him in a procession.

Nine nomination papers were rejected of the total 40 papers submitted by various candidates. Papers submitted by Amaresh (Congress), Muni Anjappa (JD-S), Patapat Srinivas (BJP), Dodda Choudappa (KGP), C K Jagadish (BSR), H K Lakshmaiah (JD-U), C Ramakrishnappa (RPI) were among those accepted.
